Settling In & Promoting Independence

We understand that starting nursery is a big step for both children and parents. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth and reassuring as possible. Upon arrival, we encourage children to be active participants in their routine—removing coats, hanging up belongings, and confidently saying goodbye.

We place a strong emphasis on developing independence, helping children learn to dress themselves, manage personal hygiene, and take responsibility for their belongings. To support this, we kindly ask parents to:

Dress children in easy-to-manage clothing (e.g., elasticated waistbands)

Avoid tricky fastenings like belts or dungarees

Pack a named spare set of clothes in a clearly labelled bag

Label all removable items of clothing

Our team is always on hand to offer comfort and reassurance during those early days. If a child becomes unsettled or distressed, we’ll be in touch right away to keep you informed and reassured.

At Little Acorns, we are committed to providing a rich learning experience rooted in care, exploration, and individual growth. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework—a government-led standard that ensures children build a solid foundation for their school years and beyond.

The EYFS curriculum covers seven key areas of development, supporting everything from communication and confidence to physical skills and creativity. We combine these principles with daily observation and tailored activity planning to meet each child's unique learning journey.

We know that smooth, calm drop-offs set the tone for a positive day. To help your child settle confidently, we encourage a simple routine:

Let your child walk in independently

Support them in hanging up their coat

Offer a cheerful goodbye and leave promptly
